...to appreciate design one must understand the purpose for which a thing is built.
In the city of Timaru there is a wonderful example of church architecture.
Built in 1909 by generous local benefactors and the pennies of humble parishioners the Basilica of the Sacred Heart has been the centre of worship for generations of Roman Catholics in the area.
For them this house of worship has been their constant through times of joy and times of sadness.
Couples have professed their marriage vows, baptised their children and farewelled their loved ones in this church.
For many non-catholics the building is an inspiration and a joy. The strong design features of columns, arches and domes are complimented by stained glass and painted highlights.
